Soviet physiologists conducted an experiment with 10 men aged 22-25 with normal hearing and eardrums. They used various sound intensities within the range of 225-4000 Hz, which is suitable for human hearing, to repeatedly measure each man's hearing ability. All 10 men had better hearing in their left ear than in their right ear.
Why is hearing in the left ear generally stronger? Physiologists have found the answer by observing electroencephalograms (EEGs). EEGs show that the right brain has a larger amplitude than the left brain because the impulses of sound perceived by the left and right ears are transmitted through the auditory nerve to the auditory centers of the left and right hemispheres via the corpus callosum. That is, impulses from the left ear cross over to the right brain via the corpus callosum, and impulses from the right ear are transmitted to the left brain. The larger amplitude in the right brain explains why the left ear has more sensitive hearing.
