Why bring this up? Ever since I started offering soundproofing tips, I've been asked countless times how to soundproof a home and how much it cost? But every time I tell them I need to tear down the existing renovations and start over, or just offer a fair price, they disappear like a scumbag, taking away my expectations and my time...
Let me briefly list a few heartless sponsors.
Actually, I understand their perspective. Soundproofing a home is not something you can be reckless about. Either you have a mine, a home in a mine, or you're seriously overly sensitive. Let's briefly explain: which is the best choice between a full-house renovation and a light installation with partitions?
1. Let's start with the price comparison, which is what we're most concerned about.
① Regarding the price of heavy installation, I just contacted a reputable soundproofing manufacturer and received their current quote:
The first, second, and third options here refer to the different soundproofing solutions, each with varying degrees of effectiveness. Based on this quote, let's take a 15-square-meter room as an example. Option 1: 270x15x5 = 20,250 square meters for the entire room, with a ceiling size of 270x15 = 4,050 square meters; Option 2: 430x15x5 = 32,250 square meters for the entire room, with a ceiling size of 430x15 = 6,450 square meters; Option 3: 650x15x5 = 48,750 square meters for the ceiling size of 650x15 = 9,750 square meters. Note that this is just the price of the materials, not the installation itself. This refers to a full-house renovation. If you're looking for cost-effective, environmentally friendly soundproofing materials, expect to pay at least 5,000 yuan.
② Price of light installation. Light installation soundproofing comes in many forms. Currently, the simplest soundproofing method on the market is soundproof curtains. They're easy to install, lightweight, and won't lock into place. I understand the price is around 550 per square meter.
In terms of price per square meter, both are actually comparable. However, considering the usable area, heavy installation costs at least 5,000 (including construction costs). Light installation partitions, such as the one shown below, are approximately 2.5 square meters. Four similar partitions cost approximately 550 x 4 = 2,200, excluding labor costs.
2. Sound Insulation Comparison:
Using the two methods shown above, the sound insulation performance of different solutions is as follows:
Solution 1: 270
Solution 2: 430
Solution 3: 650
The sound insulation levels for heavy installation range from 30dB, 35dB, and 43dB. These are the data provided by the vendors; please refer to actual reviews:
② Sound Insulation Levels for Light Installation Partitions:
In terms of sound insulation, heavy installations clearly outperform light installations.
3. Ease of Installation
From an installation perspective, lightweight partitions clearly have a significant advantage. Heavy-duty materials are often heavier. This method requires a fixed, stable, and long-term soundproofing solution, so installation requires a thorough groundwork. This makes them more suitable for new homes. Lightweight partition materials are generally lightweight, such as soundproofing curtains, which are essentially just a piece of fabric that can be moved around easily. For example, the latest soundproofing curtain design shown below utilizes a pocket-shaped design, with the outer curtain fabric already being soundproof.
The open interior can also be filled with soundproofing or absorbent cotton, creating a simple, removable partition.
To achieve its partitioning function, it also features a removable installation method.
4. Considering the purpose of soundproofing:
For the average person, the purpose of soundproofing is broadly defined as sleeping, studying, and working. Sleeping is particularly important, while studying and working require a quiet, relatively private space. If the purpose is to sleep, it is recommended to use a one-time whole-house reinstallation, but if it is only for a short period of rest, study, work, or dormitory life, it is recommended to choose a light partition sound insulation mode.
